Afexa Life Sciences Inc., founded in 1992 as a spin-off from the University of Alberta, Canada, strives to deliver the most trusted health brand on the planet through pioneering evidence-based natural medicines that empower people to achieve their health potential.
Over a 12-year period involving investments in excess of $20 million, its 25 member scientific team discovered and developed a selection of proprietary natural products. It also developed an internationally recognized and patented technology – ChemBioPrint® – which is both a discovery and standardization tool. It is the only process that accurately characterizes natural mixtures assuring batch-to-batch consistency, efficacy and safety. It precisely identifies the chemical profile and biological activity of natural health products. This is a combination of chemical and pharmacological fingerprinting that ensures each batch of products delivers verifiable and provable health benefits and is both safe and consistent with previous batches.
ChemBioPrint® represents a major scientific breakthrough in the discovery and standardization of nutraceuticals opening the door to increased consumer confidence in natural health products. It also paves the way for ground-breaking regulatory approval of medical claims involving natural products which offer the same degree of scientifically verifiable consistency, safety and efficacy as synthetic drugs. Utilizing this technology, Afexa Life Sciences has discovered and commercialized natural health products ranging from cold and flu prevention to memory enhancement.
The company’s lead product, COLD-FX®, is designed to prevent and treat colds and flu by strengthening the immune system. COLD-FX® is a natural health product that a U.S. FDA regulated Phase II Clinical Trial showed reduces the risk of getting a cold or flu by 89%. Recently, a double-blinded placebo-controlled trial in the general population showed that COLD-FX® reduced the incidence of colds and flu by 25% and reduced the relative risk of recurrence of colds by 56%. This Health Canada regulated trial, published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal in October 2005, also showed that the number of days that symptoms are experienced was reduced from an average of 17 days to 11 days with a 31% reduction in the severity of symptoms. Subsequent studies, including a multi-centre Canadian randomized double-blind placebo-controlled study with 780 participants, confirmed these findings. COLD-FX was issued a Natural Product Number(NPN) based on the strong evidence and quality standards, with the approved claim “helps reduce the frequency, severity, and duration of cold and flu symptoms by boosting the immune system.
Today, COLD-FX® is sold in over 9,000 major pharmacy, grocery and health food stores across Canada. It is the # 1 selling cold and flu product in Canada according to Nielsen Company.
Afexa Life Sciences launched REMEMBER-FX® for memory improvement in 2004 and CELL-FX® to support bone and joint health in 2005. The company also has active research and development programs in the areas of cardiovascular health and anti-aging. All its products are designed to support normal physiological functions with a user-friendly, natural compound. Utilizing its patented ChemBioPrint technology, the company has developed and commercialized a selection of premium quality natural health products for health maintenance and disease prevention.
In continuing to strengthen the science of its products, Afexa Life Sciences is conducting various clinical and pre-clinical studies in collaboration with multiple Universities to explore additional applications and therapeutic areas related to immune modulation, such as cancer, allergies, asthma, and infectious diseases. Other clinical studies are being performed looking at memory and cognitive functions in healthy aging adults, and the application of new formulations in metabolic syndrome, particularly cholesterol and blood sugar management.
